Tips On Choosing The Right Shoes For Job Interviews

When you land a job interview, your initial focus is usually on preparing for the questions you will be asked. However, it is important not to overlook another crucial aspect — your outfit. First impressions are formed in mere seconds, and your appearance plays a significant role in shaping them. Dressing well can also boost your confidence and help you perform better in the interview.

This guide is designed to help you choose the right shoes for an interview, as they are our area of expertise.

Shoes influence the way you walk and carry yourself. They also play a big role in determining your overall comfort, making it essential to choose the right pair. Consider factors like heel height and type, and whether you even want to wear heels at all. Below, we outline the types of shoes we recommend for job interviews and provide practical tips to choosing the right pair. We will also point out the common mistakes to avoid.

The Best Shoes To Wear To A Job Interview

    Closed-Toe Heels & Pumps

    Closed-Toe Heels & Pumps

There is something about wearing a pair of heels that makes one feel instantly more confident and empowered — this is especially important when it comes to job interviews. And the best heeled pumps are ones you can stand and walk comfortably in without losing your balance, all while seeing you through long hours of wear. Here are some useful tips on how to walk comfortably in heels.

When it comes to selecting heels and pumps that are appropriate for a job interview, you need to consider these two things:

    1. Heel Height: It should ideally not exceed 4 inches (or 10cm). The best heel heights are ones you feel most confident and comfortable walking in.

    2. Heel Type: With a variety of heel types to choose from, these are the ones to consider.

    • Block Heels: A great and stylish option. Their wide, sturdy base offers good balance which makes them easy to walk in while providing a moderate height boost. Opt for rectangular or trapeze heels as well as court shoes that will go well with any outfit. It is also best to avoid chunky platforms as they could be deemed inappropriate for most professional settings.
    • Kitten Heels: A fabulous alternative with a low heel height typically ranging between 1.5 to 2 inches. It is the perfect choice for those who are not used to wearing heels, or for anyone looking for a subtle lift without compromising comfort.
    • Stiletto Heels: If you feel confident and comfortable walking in stiletto pumps, they work great in most formal settings as they help to create a poised and polished look. Any pair with heels that range from a comfortable two inches to a maximum of four inches would offer a moderate and flattering height boost.

    STYLE TIP

If you do not feel the most confident in heels, bring an extra pair of flats that you can easily change into after the interview.

    BROWSE ALL HEELS

The key here is you’d want to put your best foot forward and make the best first impression in any interview setting. Most importantly, you would want to be dressed appropriately and in no way be underdressed for the occasion. Do avoid any open-toe heeled styles such as peep-toe pumps as they are considered informal and inappropriate. As a general rule of thumb, covered pumps with a comfortable heel height are among our top recommendations for work-interview shoes.

    Flats

    Flats

If you do not feel the most confident walking in heels, flats are a fabulous option as well! They are (almost) always appropriate for any interview setting. While flats do not offer a stature boost, they certainly make up for that with comfort and ease of wear. Plus, investing in a pair of flats is always a good idea — they offer incredible cost-per-wear and you will definitely continue to wear them after the interview, be it for work or the weekend.

When it comes to selecting a pair of interview-appropriate flats, it is crucial to choose a pair that will make your outfit look professional and sophisticated. Open-toe styles are a definite no-go, and we recommend covered flats. There are plenty of flattering styles to choose from, including slingback flats, ballet flats and Mary Janes — you will be spoilt for choice in this category.

We recommend picking flats with minimal embellishments and understated design elements to keep your look polished and professional. Stick to classic neutral colours like black, white and nude. It is best to choose a pair that is made with leather, faux leather or suede — avoid fabrics such as cotton or canvas as they would be too casual for a job interview setting (you wouldn't want your interviewer to think you're headed for a beach vacation)!

    Loafers

If you are looking for shoes to add a little edge and personality to your look — that are also suitable for semi-formal and business-casual settings — loafers are your best bet. They pair especially well with pantsuits for a boardroom-ready look, yet can be dressed down easily for off-duty days as well.

Once again, we recommend choosing styles with little to no embellishments and with a minimalist design — avoid chunky platform soles — to keep your look simple and polished. Loafers in neutral colours like black and brown are also failsafe options.

    Ankle Boots

    Ankle Boots

Ankle boots are certainly an unconventional choice when it comes to interview shoes — but once again, this is very much dependent on the field of work, interview setting and weather conditions. For those who live in cooler climes, boots are definitely a sensible option — and if styled well, the right pair of boots can make you appear business-ready and fashion-forward at once, so you will stand out as a candidate.

Once again, you can count on a pair of classic black boots to complete any outfit — suede and leather are always-stylish options that will go with everything. While popular, it is also best to avoid wearing chunky boots and Chelsea boots as they have a more casual aesthetic that may be inappropriate for the occasion.

    Practical Tips and Common Mistakes

    General Guidelines

Deciding on the right pair of shoes to wear to your job interviews is a subjective matter. Do you prefer to stay comfortable or to look stylish? Ideally, the right pair of shoes should strike a balance between the two. Looking smart is important, but you also want to be able to stride into your interview with confidence, rather than feeling self-conscious because you are not quite sure how to walk in your new shoes. Personal style and preferences aside, your choice of shoes should largely be based on the kind of image you wish to present to potential employers.

    • Do some research about the interview setting and location — if a lot of walking is required or there are stairs to be climbed, low-heeled options or flats would be a safer bet.
    • Consider the weather and climate — if it rains, you may want to avoid low-vamp shoes and absorbent materials like suede because they might not be able to hold up against moisture very well or provide enough warmth. Warmer climates may offer more flexibility in your choices, but you will still have to prioritise looking presentable.
    • Take into account the kind of industry you are interviewing for — corporate roles and client-facing jobs typically require sensible silhouettes, while creative jobs may favour experimental styles.
    • Consider your outfit as a whole and pick the pair of shoes that goes best with it. Think about how it works with the colours of your outfit, your jewellery and the fit of your garments. The universal rule of thumb is to dress your best while still feeling comfortable enough to concentrate on the interview.

    Dos

    • Neutral hues — not only are they universally flattering, but they are also timeless, inoffensive colours. Colours like black, white, grey and navy look professional and polished, and they will pair easily with most outfits.
    • Solid colours — avoid prints when in doubt.
    • Smart and understated designs — closed-toe shoes with modest heels are generally a safe option for formal settings like an interview.
    • Timely maintenance — before the day of the interview, clean and polish your shoes to ensure that they are in presentable condition.

    Don'ts

    • Loud details — it is best to look clean and professional, so stay clear of eye-catching embellishments, flashy patterns and bright colours.
    • Open-toe styles and strappy sandals — stick with closed-toe shoes that look smart and professional to leave a good impression
    • Sneakers — if you want to stay comfortable during the interview, opt for covered flats or loafers instead.

Whenever you have job interviews lined up, refer to these tips to make more informed choices and dress appropriately, so as to leave a pleasant first impression that can positively impact your professional future. Once you know what shoes you want to wear for your interview, explore our thoughtfully curated selection to find the perfect pair.
